Peruvian fishing communities in several of the country's coastal regions have joined forces to declare a strike against the increasing presence of foreign companies, a practice they say is abetted by the government. The fishermen charge that the foreign companies with their large fleets represent unfair competition, deplete reserves including beyond poorly enforced legal limits, drive down international seafood prices, and provide little benefit to the country's economy in return.
