They also revealed that the father is Tian Tian, whose sperm was among the specimens used to artificially inseminate the mother panda in late April.
A protein gene taken from the finger of the newborn was used to determine the cub's gender.
DNA sequencing revealed the paternal identity.
The baby is reported to be doing quite well, and mom is keeping a vigilant watch over him.
