Hundreds of migrants enter FYR Macedonia after earlier border clashes

Hundreds of migrants, including Syrian refugees, entered the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia from Greece on Friday.

The border crossings came after Macedonia briefly sealed its border with Greece and declared a state of emergency over the huge numbers of people gathered there hoping to head north to the European Union.

The Macedonian interior ministry said on Friday that the country is allowing migrants to enter again, but only in numbers that the country can provide transport and care for.

Hussa, from the besieged Syrian city of Aleppo, explained the feeling of relief after the border was reopened, but added, “it was a really bad situation for all for two or three days”.

Once inside Macedonia, the next step for many is to board a train for Serbia – and from there, travel onto Hungary, which is part of the visa-free Schengen zone.
