India is set to overtake China as the most populous country in the world much sooner than previously thought. 

According to new data from the United Nations, India and China will both have populations of around 1.4 billion by 2022--with India pulling slightly ahead. This is six years earlier than demographic indicators had previously suggested. 

India currently has a population of 1.31 billion, while China's population is currently at 1.38 billion.
