In a major development with positive implications for the country's peace process, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) announced that as of July 20 it would implement a unilateral ceasefire. The recent escalation of the conflict had complicated the peace talks and the rebel's ceasefire offer is seen as an important good-will gesture.
