Residents of the Mexican indigenous community of San Francisco Xochicuautla are battling the construction of a highway they say will put their land and way of life in jeopardy. They also charge that the government-sponsored project, which has violated agreements requiring that indigenous communities be consulted prior to its launching, will open the door to privatization and affect other villages.
