A Honduran court has issued an international arrest warrant for Enrique Flores Lanza, who was a member of the presidential cabinet under democratically elected President Manuel Zelaya, who was deposed in a 2009 coup. Flores was part of a team in charge of organizing a referendum on a constituent assembly during Zelaya's progressive administration. The opposition Libre Party charged that the court proceedings are a smokescreen for the political persecution of Flores, who has fled the country, and could be a prelude for other judicial actions against opponents of the current government.
