Lima, Peru was the scene of three trade union demonstrations on Monday. Striking forensic pathologists, administrative workers of the education sector on strike since June 4, and primary and secondary school teachers from across Peru took to the streets of the capital to voice their demands. A common denominator is inadequate salaries; for more than 20 years teachers' salaries have not kept pace with the rising cost of living. The refusal of the government to respond to demands on a sector-by-sector basis has resulted in a unification of popular discontent. The growing protests coincide with a drop in public support for President Ollanta Humala, whose popularity ratings have plummeted to 14%, their lowest level ever.
