Pascal Canfin, a senior climate advisor with the World Resources Institute and former development minister with François Hollande's government, spoke to FRANCE 24's Mairead Dundas. He is optimistic about reaching a global agreement in December at the climate summit in Paris.
Pascal Canfin welcomes the G7’s recent commitment to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 70% in 2050. "That’s the kind of political commitment we need in order to be able to find the landing zone in Paris", he said. "It’s not a technical issue, it’s a political issue, and we need some political commitments".
He also explains that any agreement signed in Paris will be a "basis", but "many commitments" will then be pledged outside an agreement.
Pascal Canfin is optimistic that a deal can be reached in December. "We have a couple of world leaders who are really personally committed to success in Paris", he said, referring to François Hollande, Barack Obama and Angela Merkel.
