In Peru, many families are still fighting for justice over the forced disappearance of thousands, and a new United Nations report indicates that there is still much work to be done in order to achieve justice. In the emblematic case of Ernesto Castillo, family members were finally able to jail the four officers who detained their son. Three of the agents spent less than six years in prison, however, and they continue to refuse to turn over Ernesto’s body. At least 15,000 disappearances occurred during the internal armed conflict that ended over two decades ago, and most of the families have not even been able to start a judicial process.
