Colombia: Gov't, Rebels to Establish Truth Commission

The 37th round of the Colombian peace talks just concluded in Havana. The government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia agreed to the creation of a Truth Commission. The Commission will begin work once a final peace agreement has been signed. Chief Colombian government peace negotiator Humberto de la Calle explained that the Commission will not have judicial powers and will therefore not compete with the courts. It is widely felt that the different forces that participated in the civil war must assume responsibility for their role in the conflict and the plight of its victims. Shedding light on the truth of what occurred in the five-decade long conflict is a starting point for reconciliation. teleSUR
