Re-elected just last week for a fifth term, Sepp Blatter announced his resignation on Tuesday as the head of the world soccer governing body, saying that “although the members of FIFA have given me a new mandate, have re-elected me president, this mandate does not seem to be supported in the world of soccer—supporters, clubs, players.” His resignation does not mean he will be out the door right away, however. The 79-year-old Swiss national has called an extraordinary FIFA congress to elect the new president, an election that is expected to take place between November 2015 and March 2016, which means that Blatter is probably there to stay for at least another year.
