About Macquarie University Singers
Macquarie University Singers (MUS) was established by the renowned carillonist John Gordon in 1967, the year the University was first opened to students. While MUS has been about fostering, supporting and performing choral music, the Society has always aimed to encourage the formation of strong links between Macquarie University and the wider community through singing. Membership is open to students, staff and members of the community. The choir performs two major concerts per year, generally at the Macquarie Theatre, and occasionally performs at campus and community events. MUS can be seen singing Christmas carols at Macquarie Hospital and North Ryde RSL Club every year. Since 2000, MUS (along with the Willoughby Symphony Choir) has been “the choir” at Australian Philharmonic Orchestra (Auspops) concerts at Sydney Opera House, notably in the ‘Not New Years Eve’ concerts regularly performed in Late December each year.

MUS warmly welcomed Dr Sarah Penicka-Smith in 2013 as our Principal Conductor. The choir previously performed with Sarah as guest conductor of Karl Jenkins’ The Armed Man in 2010.
Sarah conducted our most recent concert, Karl Jenkins’ The Peacemakers and our June 2014 concert, Roots of Rhythm, which traced the development of rhythm from its African roots, through Negro Spirituals, Jazz and the Blues, to the 21st Century. She also conducted our June 2013 concert, A Musical Dream, featuring a program of choruses from Opera and Musical Theatre, in the newly re-furbished Macquarie Theatre.
