The United States is boosting its military presence in Central America, with the troops ostensibly to be used to fight drug trafficking and organized crime. Of the 280 marines to be sent to Central America, 180 will be stationed in Honduras, with most of the others deployed in Guatemala and El Salvador. The drug war has been used as a pretext to increase Washington's military presence in the region, although the results to date in terms of reducing crime and violence have been lackluster.
