In 2011, before the Colombian peace talks were launched, there were an average of 179 military confrontations between the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) and the army, according to the NGO Peace and Reconciliation. During the past five months, during which the FARC had declared a unilateral ceasefire, the number plummeted by 90% to an average of 18. This translates into 600 fewer fatal casualties and 14,000 campesinos not being displaced. The renewed hostilities between the two sides in the past few weeks has led local leaders to demand that the government accept the rebel proposal of a bilateral ceasefire.
