Forensic police in Malaysia exhume migrant corpses buried along the Thai border

Malaysian forensic teams are involved in the macabre task of exhuming the bodies of hundreds of migrants found at 140 grave sites and abandoned jungle camps on country’s inaccessible border with Thailand.

Authorities are trying to determine whether the victims are Bangladeshi or Rohingya migrants.

Human traffickers are suspected of being behind the deaths.

Police believe the victims died of starvation or disease while being incarcerated by the human smugglers.

It is unknown how many corpses are buried in the shallow graves.

Earlier this month dozens of decomposed bodies were found on the Thai side of the frontier.

The gruesome discoveries prompted the Malaysian interior minister to claim some government forestry officials may be involved with the human traffickers.

Rohingya Muslims have long been persecuted in Myanmar with thousands displaced following a spate sectarian attacks in Rakhine state since 2012.
