The Honduran government has promised to decentralize control of the nation’s health system and to hand over at least five public hospitals to non-governmental organizations. Some see the move as the latest step in the privatization of the country’s public health system. It is easier for the government to do this than assume its constitutional responsibility and face underlying problems, say some critics. Proponents defend the measure as a way to deal with widespread corruption and inefficiency, but have not revealed who the new owners and administrators will be and whether or not they have political connections. Gerardo Torres reports from Tegucigalpa for teleSUR.
