Executives from some of the world's biggest companies are gathering in Paris this week. Climate Week Paris is meant to galvanise the business community and it comes in the lead-up to a global summit in the French capital in December. Leaders from 196 countries will try to strike a global agreement to cap greenhouse gas emissions.
For more on what business can do ahead of the summit, FRANCE 24's Markus Karlsson speaks to Peter Bakker. He is president and CEO of The World Business Council for Sustainable Development, which brings together some 200 leading global companies.
Peter Bakker is confident that business can be a positive force in the fight against climate change. “Business has now recognised that creating solutions and scaling them up is actually an opportunity”, he explains.
The business leader also points out that since Copenhagen, there is increased awareness of the reality of climate change. “The lobby saying that climate is not changing has basically lost the match”, he says.
Peter Bakker is hopeful that a deal can be reached at the Paris summit on capping emissions. “The time for inaction is over”, he warns, “and the cost of inaction is by now bigger than the cost of action”.
