The Adapted Military Service Regiment was created 50 years ago in Martinique, well before the end of conscription in France. It currently only exists in France's overseas territories. Its aim is to bring underachieving young people back on track. The army provides a framework and job skills to over 5,000 people every year, with encouraging results.
The model has been so successful that it could soon make its way to mainland France. At the end of April, President Hollande announced that the programme would be trialled on the mainland, with the creation of seven military vocational training centres.
