A new wave of organization and political activity has emerged among Peruvian youth. The new ferment began in opposition to proposed labor legislation that would have reduced benefits for younger workers, including wages and vacation days. The protests forced Congress to repeal the law, and the participants felt emboldened and with wind in their sails. The new movement divided Lima into four action zones each with two to four neighborhoods to stimulate grass roots participation. One of the campaigns currently underway is against authorities' moves to cancel plans to build parks and housing for low-income communities and instead construct three bypasses to facilitate motor vehicle traffic. The recent ongoing protests in central Peru against the Tia Maria mining project have also sparked solidarity campaigns among youth in other parts of the country. Rael Mora reports from Lima, teleSUR
