A Bangladeshi woman was pulled alive from the rubble of a garment factory in Dhaka 17 days after it collapsed, several media have reported.
Reshma Begum was discovered near a Muslim prayer room in the basement of the eight-storey Rana Plaza building on the outskirts of Dhaka. Trapped in a pocket amid the debris, the woman used a sharp object to cut her hair and free herself from the rubble, Stuff Nation said. In interviews, she said she survived the first 15 days by eating dry food she found among the rubble. The last two days she had nothing but water. When she heard rescue workers calling for people who were still alive, she started banging the wreckage of the building with sticks and rods, and eventually with a steel pipe. As Stuff Nation reported, the rescue crews could not believe there might be a survivor. They used handsaws, welding and drilling equipment to cut through iron bars and debris trapping her, before eventually reaching her. According to Reuters, after freeing her "emergency workers placed an oxygen mask on her face and loaded her into an ambulance that sped away with its doors open." Rescuers said she was in good condition, and that despite her ordeal she was well enough to walk.
