A New Delhi traffic constable has been arrested after he was caught on video hurling a brick at a woman who just wouldn’t accept his extortion attempt.

Head Constable Satish Chand was dismissed when cellphone footage captured by a passer-by went viral.

The violence erupted when the woman ran a red light while she was taking her two daughters to school on her scooter, NDTV reports.

The unidentified mother said officer Chand told her she would need to give him 200 rupees, or around US$3, for the minor infraction.

When the woman refused to pay on the spot and asked for a notice to be sent to her home instead, he refused and kicked her bike, witnesses told NDTV.

The woman attempted to retaliate and hurled a brick at the traffic cop’s motorcycle, but officer Chand threw another brick right back at her, striking her, before next twisting her arm.

“My wife said she had a license, registration and was wearing a helmet so she would not pay,” the woman’s husband told NDTV. “She said she was in a hurry as her children were with her, and asked him to send a notice and she would pay the fine.”

After the incident, the woman received hospital treatment for her injuries on her arms and back.

Police chief BS Bassi, speaking to the news station, described Chand’s actions as “shameful”.

The head constable served on the Bulandshahr police force since 1988.
