Interviews from Mexico, hosted by Laura Carlsen, goes straight to the source -- the men and women making news and making history in Mexico and throughout the region. Today our host interviews Sergio Gonzalez Rodriguez, reporter, novelist and author of a new book, “The Robbery of the Century,” on the case of Zhenli Ye Gon, a Chinese-Mexican businessman who was captured in his house with US$205 million in cash and accused of importing chemicals for making illegal drugs. The author says that the largest cash seizure in history prompted him to find out the story behind the facts. And this is why he chose the genre of the non-fiction novel. Where is the money? We don’t really know, says González Rodriguez. The explanations are contradictory. The arrest and seizure were unconstitutional. Many of the agents involved in the arrest have been killed. The book is really about power, corruption and impunity – the greatest stimulus to crime, says the author. The interview closes with a mention of his other books and the threats and beatings he has received for writing them. What moves him to keep on putting himself at risk? He continues his work in honor of the Mexican journalists who have been killed, says Gonzalez Rodriguez. teleSUR
