Striking agricultural day laborers from the San Quintin Valley in the northwest Mexican state of Baja California reached a tentative agreement with authorities late Wednesday evening that would provide a salary increase and better working conditions. The tentative agreement would boost pay from current levels of US$7 for a 12 to 15-hour workday to about US$13 for an eight hour day and provide social security, health care and other benefits. The negotiations involving federal and state authorities and Labor Ministry officials also focused on demands for freeing four workers arrested over the weekend in clashes with police. The San Quintin strike against multinational agroindustrial corporations, which began March 17, has drawn attention and support on both sides of the border.
