Teenaged shoplifting suspect shot dead by off-duty officer in Texas

An off-duty Texan police officer shot dead a teenager suspected of shoplifting from a Walmart following a foot chase and struggle in woods adjacent to the supermarket.

Nineteen-year-old Russell Rios allegedly tried to pocket items without paying at the Conroe Walmart. Store security confronted him but he escaped and fled the store.

The security staff chased after him across the store's car park. An off-duty police officers noticed the men running after the teenager and offered to help. He joined the chase and followed Rios into a nearby wooded area.

About nine meters (30 feet) in, he caught Rios and a violent struggle ensued. The officer says Rios began to choke him. He then drew a handgun and shot the teenager once, killing him.

The officer was treated at a local hospital for minor injuries. He has been placed on administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.
