El Segundo police officer Armando Rodriguez is being hailed a hero by his colleagues after pulling a 22-year-old woman from a burning car wreck. The woman hit a utility pole on Aviation Boulevard in a single vehicle accident.
The woman was trapped and couldn't get out. Police officer Armando Rodriguez was close by when he heard the call over the radio. He was driving east along El Segundo and turned north onto Aviation.
Footage from a vehicle dash camera shows Rodriguez pulling up to the accident and racing toward the burning vehicle. According to the Daily Breeze, Rodriguez pulled the woman from the car and dragged her onto a grassy area.
Moments later, the car was engulfed in flames. Rodriguez was treated for smoke inhalation and minor burns to his hands. His colleagues say the woman could have died had he not acted so quickly.
The Daily Breeze reports that Rodriguez is a veteran of the US Air Force and has been in the police force for 17 years. Following his Air Force service, he worked as an officer for the Los Angeles International Airport police from 1996 to 2004 and then joined the El Segundo Police Department.
Police are still seeking information on how the accident occurred.
