At least 15 people were killed when a chartered plane crashed near the fuel dump area of the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos, Nigeria on Thursday morning.

Airport officials said The Brazilian-made turboprop Embraer-120 suffered engine failure a few minutes after taking off and crashed near the fuel dump area nearly missing fuel-laden containers.

The pilot detected a problem soon after taking off and tried to return to the airport for an emergency landing but did not make it, a police official said.

After hitting the ground, the plane broke in half and caught fire. Fire engines were brought in to put out the blaze, along with two cranes to clear the debris. The front section was burnt beyond recognition, while the back area was almost intact.

The plane was reported to be carrying the body of Dr. Olusegun Agagu, the former governor of Ondo State, and members of his family who had attended his funeral this weekend.The aircraft's black box has been recovered and the remains of the late governor have been taken to an air force base.
