Cupertino city officials earlier this week voted unanimously to give Apple Inc the green light to build its massive new campus, according to a report by the San Jose Mercury News.

"For billions of customers around the world, Cupertino is synonymous with Apple. It's on every box; everybody knows that," said Dan Whisenhunt, Apple's head of real estate and facilities, according to the report. "The Mac, the iPod, the iPhone, the iPad, they were all created right here in this town. We are immensely proud of that and hope that future generations of Apple innovations will hail from Cupertino."

The iPhone maker's planned energy-efficient headquarters will be a circular building resembling a massive spaceship, with a roof adorned with solar panels.

The 176-acre campus, which will border an interstate highway, is set to include a 1,000-seat auditorium, jogging trails and a valet parking centre.

In order to accommodate up to 16,000 employees, the four-storey ring will house a subterranean parking lot capable of holding up to 4,300 vehicles.

The $5 billion campus was a pet project of deceased Apple co-founder Steve Jobs.

"It's a pretty amazing building," said Jobs during a 2011 presentation in front of the Cupertino City Council. "It's a little like a spaceship landed."

The campus is expected to be completed by 2016.
