A suicide bomber struck outside a Shiite mosque in Rawalpindi, near Pakistan's capital of Islamabad on Tuesday (December 17).

According to the Nation, a suicide bomber arrived a Shiite mosque on a motorcycle in Chaklala's Grassy Line area near Benazir Bhutto Airport at around 9:48 pm. The suspect was stopped at a police check point for a body search when he detonated the bomb. It was reported that four to five pounds of explosives laced with ball bearings were used in the attack.

The blast damaged at least two cars and almost a dozen motorcycles. According to Reuters, at least three people were killed, including the bomber, and eight more were wounded. Other sources say, at least 14 people were injured. No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

Sectarian violence has been rising in Pakistan. The blast came only a day after a prominent Shiite cleric was shot dead in Lahore. Maulana Shamsur Rehman, a provincial leader of Sunni organization was shot dead as he left a mosque in the same area on December 6.
