Two security officers at Singapore's Marina Bay Suites apartment building are dead after a fire swept through the 65th floor. The two fire victims were confirmed dead at around 2 a.m. on Tuesday and were identified by police as Sim Lai Huat from Singapore, 58, and Malaysian national Sooria Kala, 34.
Singapore's Marina Bay Suites is an ultra-luxury condominium apartment building located near the famous Marina Bay Sands Casino. Firefighters responded to reports of a fire just after 10 p.m. on Monday and after climbing some 20 floors, firefighters found the 65th floor engulfed in flames. After dousing the fire, rescuers broke open a service elevator on the 65th floor in which they discovered the charred bodies of the two building employees.
Authorities say the fire began in a section of the 65th floor that was undergoing renovations. The fire was contained on the 65th floor.
The 66-storey luxury condominium, developed by a consortium that includes Keppel Land, Cheung Kong Holdings and Hongkong Land Holdings, is one of the ritziest condo apartment buildings in Singapore, with one of the buildings' penthouse units selling for over US$19 million last year.
Residents were given the all-clear to return to their apartments at around 2:30 a.m. on Tuesday. One resident told reporters she had walked down 53 flights of stairs to safety as the lifts were shut down due to the fire. It is still unclear why the two security officers were inside the service lift at the time of the fire.
