Four women were killed in a suicide bomb attack targeted at mourners at a funeral in Pakistan, Peshawar on Monday (February 10).
When police spotted the suicide bomber among a group of mourners, he fled to the house of Jan Mohammad Afridi, a tribal elder who opposes militants. Inside, women were holding funeral prayers.
After an exchange of fire with the police, the bomber detonated his device, killing four women in the house and injuring five others, including a woman and two children. It is not clear whether the bomber set off the explosives or if they were triggered by the gunfire.
The bomber was fitted with about 6 kg of explosives and ball bearings in his suicide vest, Shafqat Malik, chief of Peshawar's Bomb Disposal Unit, said in an AFP report.
Reports say that two other suicide bombers were spotted but fled the scene before.
In a separate incident on Monday, separatist group Baluch Republican Army blew up three gas pipelines in Pakistan's southwestern Baluchistan province, cutting off supply to millions of households.
These attacks took place as the Pakistani government was engaged in peace talks with the Taliban, which is demanding the release of all Taliban prisoners and the withdrawal of all state troops from tribal regions.
