Couer D'Alene deputies began their pursuit of Buquet after he shot 29-year-old Frank James in the chest and then fired at multiple bystanders.

Mid-way through the five-mile chase, Buquet's car spun out after he tried to turn too fast. He next reportedly got out and began firing at police.

The officers returned fire, shooting 77 times at Buquet, who died at the scene.

A local prosecutor ruled the shooting justified, saying the suspect posed a threat to law enforcement officers and citizens.

"Mr. Buquet posed an immediate and continuing danger to the lives of anyone who he may have come into contact with," said Kootenai County Prosecutor Barry McHugh. "There was absolutely no indication at that time that he intended to stop his continuing violent conduct or surrender to officers when they fired to stop him."
