An e-cigarette exploded in the face of a bartender and it was caught on camera at the Buck Inn Hotel in Yorkshire, England in a video posted to video-sharing site LiveLeak yesterday. No serious injuries were reported but the incident stirred up debate regarding the safety of e-cigarettes.
Laura Baty served up a pint to one of the patrons and was returning the man's change. The video showed what appears to be a fuse exploding behind her a split second before an e-cigarette explodes in her face.
The owner of the e-cigarette, fellow employee Stewart Paterson, was using an iphone charger to charge the e-cig at the time of the explosion.
Baty is lucky that she wasn't seriously injured considering an exploding lithium-ion battery can reach temperatures of up to 1000 degrees Fahrenheit. The Electrical Safety First group advises that e-cigarettes should not be left charging for long periods of time.
"We cannot comment on the circumstance of this particular instance or make any comment on the provenance of this battery," said a spokesman for the manufacturer of the battery, Totally Wicked E Liquid. "However, it does not appear that a dedicated electronic cigarette charger was used."
