Colombian police seized almost 3 tonnes of liquid cocaine on Tuesday at the port of Cartagena.

The drug was ready to be shipped from Cartagena to Santo Tomas de Castilla in Guatemala hidden in an electric transformer containing 5,430 kg of dielectric oil.

Contained inside the oil was 2,877kg of cocaine hydrochloride, which represents a cocaine concentration of 53%.

The cocaine was certified by the Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences of Barranquilla, and according to local paper El Tiempo the drug belonged to Los Urabeños, a narcotraffic gang made up of former right-wing paramilitaries.

According to police that seized the shipment, the value of the cocaine, if it had reached Guatemala, would have been US$70 million.

The bust comes a week after authorities in the same port discovered seven tons of cocaine bound for Holland, in Europe.

Colombia national police recently sent a special investigative team to Cartagena to look into suspicions that some cops assigned to its port were colluding with drug traffickers.
