It sounds like a scene from a movie, but writing SOS in the sand saved six Australian snorkelers on Monday.

Three male and two female snorkelers visited an area near the Whitsunday islands on April 20.

The group went to the area to enjoy a day of swimming, snorkeling, exploring, and snorkeling, the snorkelers were dismayed to discover themselves stranded after their boat---with all their supplies--broke anchor and drifted away.

Deciding attempts to swim to the boat were futile, some in the group swam to a nearby sandbar and wrote S.O.S. in huge letters on the sand.

Nine hours later, a rescue helicopter spotted the message and the group was winched to safety.

Rescue workers said the snorkelers were found in good condition, requiring only water and treatment for sunburns.
