A Hammond, Indiana police officer has been placed on leave after someone uploaded a video of him abusing a K-9 unit to YouTube.
It was a routine traffic stop in which officers employed a K-9 unit to sniff for drugs. No drugs were found, but one officer rewarded the dog with a ball.
When the dog refused to give up the ball, the officer began picking the dog up by its collar and beating the dog with a leash. The video was recorded by an onlooker and uploaded to YouTube on Wednesday.
The video went viral on Thursday and prompted a response from Hammond's mayor.
"Anybody who loves dogs as much as I do is saddened and shocked when you hear or see a dog being abused. When you find out that it happens with an employee of yours, it makes it that much more shocking and disturbing," Mayor Thomas McDermott posted on his Facebook page.
The officer has been placed on leave. His identity has not been released because police are treating the incident as a personal issue.
