Just hours after Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau threatened in a video to sell 200 girls abducted from a secondary school last month, suspected gunmen from the rebel group raided a village in northeastern Nigeria, kidnapping eight more girls.
In the latest abduction, gunmen arrived at the village of Warabe near one of the Islamist group's strongholds late on Monday night, taking the girls, aged 12 to 15, along with some livestock and food.
According to Lazarus Musa, a resident of the village, the armed men also opened fire during the raid. "Many people tried to run behind the mountain but when they heard gun shots, they came back," Musa said.
On Tuesday, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry spoke with Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan who welcomed a U.S. offer to send an American team to Nigeria to support efforts to find the kidnapped girls.
Some of the girls taken during the mass abduction at the Chibok Government Girls Secondary School on April 15 have reportedly been forced to marry their abductors, or have been taken across the border into Cameroon and Chad. More than 280 remain missing.
In a separate attack early on Monday, suspected gunmen from the Islamist group shot or hacked to death at least 13 people in a market town raid in Nigeria's northeast. Boko Haram remains the country's greatest security threat.
