Paige Bartram, a 17-year-old from Leeds, is sick of being accused of drunkenness when she passes out in public. The teenager faints frequently due to bizarre illness called Postural Tachycardia Syndrome, or PoTS.
Bartram has suffered from Postural Tachycardia Syndrome for five years but was only properly diagnosed last November at the age of 16. The illness causes her nervous system to respond abnormally when she stands up. She faints if she stands up for more than 30 minutes.
Bartram has had some serious accidents in the past. She was once left lying on the street for about half an hour in winter because passers-by assumed she was drunk. Another time she fainted and fell all the way down a flight of stairs and fractured her neck.
She has now learned to manage her condition. Sometimes she will sit down for a few minutes if she thinks she's going to faint.
Postural Tachycardia Syndrome causes dizziness and fainting. Other symptoms can include shakiness, shortness of breath, chest pain and headaches.
Until a suitable treatment is found, Bartram has to learn to live with her symptoms.
