Woman's self defense saved her life in Taipei Subway mass killing spree

The 37-year-old Surveying Assistant, Tsai Yueh-yin (蔡月銀), from New Taipei City Government's Land Administration Department (新北市地政局) told us how she fought off the attacker who killed four people and injured two dozen others on a Taipei subway train last Wednesday afternoon.
She said the attacker would particularly target those who begged for mercy. She was attacked three times by the suspect Cheng Jie (鄭捷) but successfully fended him off with her purse when each time he stabbed at her abdomen.
There was also a mother with a two or three month old baby near her when the attack happened. Out of pure instinct, Tsai pulled the mother behind her and tried to fight off the attacker with her purse, which coincidentally contained a book titled 'Understanding 'Rebellious Children'. The book stopped the blade and saved her life.
Tsai said the attacker would cease attacking those who fought him off. However, when the woman near Tsai begged the attacker for mercy after being stabbed once, he then stabbed her fatally in the abdomen.
Tsai's fingers got badly injured during the attack. She said full use of her fingers won't be restored, even after rehabilitation.
She has been travelling to Jiangzicui Subway Station (江子翠站) everyday over the past week to mourn the dead.
Tsai said she doesn't hate the attacker, nor does she feel upset over the attack. "It was just like I accidentally cut my fingers while cooking. I'm not deeply affected by it now." she said.
