Six-time Olympic swimming gold medalist Amy Van Dyken Rouen is in an intensive care unit after severing her spine following an ATV accident in Show Low, Arizona last Friday, according to a report by the Arizona Republic.
The accident took place in the Torreon Golf Club parking lot shortly after sundown.
Van Dyken Rouen's husband, former Denver Broncos punter Tom Rouen, had recently replaced the throttle mechanism on the ATV from a thumb accelerator to a twist accelerator.
Rouen told police he's unsure whether that caused the accident, but whatever the cause, the ATV accelerated forward over a parking lot curb and she flew five to seven feet in the air.
When she landed, the spinal cord was severed at the T11 vertebrae and fragments from the vertebrae came within millimeters of rupturing her aorta.
A witness ran to her, called 911, and she was rushed to the ICU at Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn Medical Center. Van Dyken Rouen was listed in "good" condition but said she couldn't feel her legs.
