While camping at Elephant Butte Lake State Park earlier this week, a stag group noticed what appeared to be a tusk jutting about four inches out of the ground.

After some digging, the group took pictures of the tusk and skull, and sent them to the New Mexico Museum of Natural History. The group thought the fossils belonged to a Woolly mammoth at the time.

Scientists studied the images and said that the fossil looks like a Stegomastodon, a 9-foot tall, 13,000-pound prehistoric elephant that roamed New Mexico millions of years ago.

"He advised us that it may not be a Woolly Mammoth it's the wrong era and weren't conducive to this area. He says it's more the ice age era 40-60 million years old and chances are good it's a mastodon," Antonio Gradillas said in a KRQE report.
The area around the discovered skull has now been sealed off while a team of paleontologists work on excavating the fossil. The fossil looks to be 100 percent complete, according to one of the workers.
