A Japanese man set himself on fire at one of Tokyo's busiest railway stations Sunday afternoon in what appears to have been a horrifying political protest.

The man, at his 60s, doused himself with what appeared to be gasoline, and set himself alight in Shinjuku Station at around 1PM. Fortunately, though he sustained burns all over his body, he survived from his injuries.

Witnesses say the man wore a suit and tie and climb atop the scaffolding of a pedestrian overpass in the Shinjuku area, in front of hundreds of onlookers.

He was then seen sitting cross-legged on a small mat, speaking through a megaphone for over an hour to protest against Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's plans to allow for the "right to collective self-defense."

After making his appeal, the man suddenly doused himself what witnesses suspected to be two bottles of gasoline, and set himself on fire with a lighter.

Firefighters who were standing by already quickly sprayed the self-immolating man with water before he fell from the bridge scaffolding. He was taken to a nearby hospital in serious condition.

Police have yet to release the man's identity and the reason for the self-immolation.
