A man was hospitalized after being bitten by a great white shark at Manhattan Beach beach in southern California on Saturday morning. His injuries are reportedly not life threatening.

The attack occurred around 9.30 a.m. The victim, one among a group of long distance swimmers, had inadvertently swum close to the shark after a fisherman on a pier had hooked and then struggled with the roughly 7 foot (2 metre) long fish for close to 40 minutes.

A witness to the event described the swimmer's hand catching the fishing line, pulling the shark closer to him, just before it bit him on the upper body.

The shark managed to break free from the line, according to witnesses; the fisherman also severed his line when he realised the shark had attacked the swimmer.

The unidentified swimmer, reportedly aged 40, was taken by ambulance to at Harbor UCLA Medical Center for treatment.

"Lifeguards barred swimmers from entering the water for a mile-long (1.6 km) stretch around where the attack occurred, and watched the shark until it swam further out into the ocean" reported Reuters, quoting a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

The beach was reopened at about 2.30 p.m.
