A 5-year-old Kansas girl who was kidnapped on Friday night was killed before a gun battle between authorities and her abductor following a high-speed chase, police said on Saturday.
The kidnapper, who has been identified as Marcus McGowan, was injured by police after he fired at least six shots at them.
The shooting was reported about 7:30 p.m. Friday at 18th and Metropolitan in Leavenworth.
Police said there was some relationship between the child and her abductor but did not provide details. A woman claiming to be McGowan's sister said he was not the biological father, but that he was dating the girl's mother, who lived with the man and his family.
McGowan reportedly abducted the girl from Atchison on Friday night. Police said they chased the suspect from Kansas into Missouri and back.
The man crashed into construction barricades in Leavenworth. After he crashed his SUV through the barricades, he was involved in a short standoff with police. Witness and police reports vary at this point. Some witnesses said he turned the gun on the little girl in front of police and witnesses. Police have yet to confirm.
The suspect then exited the SUV and turned his gun police.
Police retreated to defensive positions before opening fire on the 30-year-old man.
Cadence was pronounced dead at the scene. McGowan was placed in handcuffs and put into the ambulance. He was then taken to a Kansas City area hospital for treatment for his injuries.
