A Florida State University professor was shot dead as he pulled into the driveway of his suburban home on July 18..

Just 36 hours before Dan Markel, a lecturer in criminal law, was slain he had made posted comments about the death penalty to his blog. Sources say he had received death threats concerning controversial topics dating back to 2012.

On Friday, just before 11 a.m., he was on his phone when he was told the other person that someone was in his driveway.

Police say that just before 11 a.m. on the day of his killing, Markel was on the phone in his car when he told the person on the other end of the line that someone was standing in his driveway. The killer struck, one bullet entered Markel’s head beneath his jaw. The driver’s side window of his 2008 Honda was shattered.

A neighbor heard the sound of a single gunshot and a saw silver Toyota Prius driving away from Markel’s home, prompting the neighbor to call 911.

Tallahassee police arrived to find Markel still breathing. He was rushed to hospital where he later died.

Authorities have created dedicated tip line and are asking anyone with information to call: 891-4462.
