Homophones are not gay headphones.

They’re words that sound the same, but have different spellings and meanings.

Yet this very explanation got Utah English language teacher Tim Torkildson fired for posting it on his personal blog.

I suspect it’s simply because his boss, like a lot of people, can’t remember grade school English. The prefix “homo” means “man” in Latin and “same” in Greek. A homophone is a word that sounds the same but is spelled differently and has a different meaning.
