Brazilian authorities have dismantled a criminal group which they believe was the worst group of deforesters operating in the Amazon rainforest.
A police spokesman in the Para state of Brazil told AFP that eight arrests have been made and another six suspects are still at large. The gang has allegedly destroyed of 38,000 acres (15,500 hectares) of Amazon rain forest, AFP reported.
The suspects allegedly would burn forest on public land, divide the land and sell it to farmers and ranchers, causing an estimated $230 million in environmental damage, the Morning Star reported.
It was reported by the BBC that annual destruction of the Amazon rain forest rose by 28 percent last year from the previous year. Brazil is the world’s sixth biggest carbon dioxide emitter. Deforestation is responsible for up to 75 percent of the country’s greenhouse gas emissions.
