David William Latham, a ‘prominent’ local banker from a suburb of Bellingham, Washington State, is in hot water and facing possible jail time after he mistakenly shot and killed a neighbor’s dog last week.
Around 7.20 p.m. on September 13 Williams, who was intoxicated at the time, according to police, became annoyed with the constant barking of a neighbor’s dog.
So he grabbed a rifle and walked over to the residence of Cary Chunyk and Loyce Williams and pumped a bullet into the couple’s Corgi Molly, before turning around and walking away as if nothing had happened.
Latham was later arrested and a police search of his home turned up nine guns. He was charged with first degree animal cruelty, a class C felony, as well as misdemeanor charges of brandishing a weapon and second-degree criminal trespassing. He faces a sentence of up to 5 years.
In a court appearance last week, Latham pleaded not guilty and said that the gun he used was in fact a pellet gun.
Dog owners from across the states, meanwhile, have rallied around after hearing about the incident. They have set up a FACEBOOK page called “Justice for Molly the Corgi” that has more than 10,000 likes. The page calls for the maximum sentence for Latham.
While a family from New Hampshire whose Corgi just had a litter is offering to drive across country to deliver a replacement dog.
