The United States, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates launched a series of airstrikes in Syria Wednesday targeting oil refineries controlled by the Islamic State.

The warplanes destroyed 12 of the Islamic State’s modular oil refineries near the towns of Al Mayadin, Al Hasakah and Abu Kamal in the eastern part of Syria, according to the United States Central Command.

The Pentagon estimates the Islamic State gains up to $2 million per day in illicit oil sales, which provided it with the funds to finance operations in Iraq and Syria, the Wall Street Journal reported.

U.S. conducted several airstrikes against the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Reports said one airstrike damaged eight IS vehicles in Syria, northwest of Iraq’s Al Qa’im. Two airstrikes destroyed two IS armed vehicles and a weapons cache west of Baghdad.

IS positions southeast of Irbil were also destroyed by the airstrikes.
