German logistics firm DHL has been given permission to use a drone to deliver parcels to Juist island, the first time that an unmanned aircraft has been authorized to deliver goods in Europe.

The drone, called the “parcelcopter,” can fly up to 65 kilometers per hour and can carry a payload weighing up to 1.2 kilograms. The drone will be used to deliver medication and other urgently needed objects to the island. It takes 15 to 30 minutes for the drone to complete the 12-kilometer flight route, according to Reuters.

Because of privacy and safety concerns, the drone will not fly over any houses on the island. At DHL’s request, German authorities have created a restricted flight area that will be used only by the drone, Reuters reported.

The trial for the drone will begin on Friday and is expected to continue until mid-October.
